Heart Health: Vitamin C linked to lower stroke risk: study
Increased blood levels of vitamin C may reduce the risk of stroke by 42 per cent, suggests a large European-based study.
Increased levels of the vitamin, associated with increased intake of fruit and vegetables, were found to offer significant cardiovascular benefits among the 20,649 men and women taking part in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer.
The authors, led by Phyo Myint from the University of Cambridge, state that blood levels of the vitamin could be used as a biological marker of lifestyle used to identify people at high risk of stroke.
“An intriguing possibility is that the plasma vitamin C concentration is a good marker of a wider range of health behaviors, such as fruit and vegetable consumption, that may be protective against stroke,” wrote Myint in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. “It is also plausible that vitamin C may biochemically affect stroke risk.”
Strokes occur when blood clots or an artery bursts in the brain and interrupts the blood supply to a part of the brain. It is the leading cause of disability and the third leading cause of death in Europe and the US. According to the Stroke Alliance for Europe (SAFE), about 575,000 deaths are stroke related in Europe every year. In the US, every 45 seconds someone will experience a stroke, according to the American Stroke Association.
Myint and co-workers followed the subjects for 9.5 years and documented 448 strokes during this time. The subjects completed a health and lifestyle questionnaire at the start of the study, and blood samples were taken to measure vitamin C levels.
The highest average blood levels of vitamin C (greater than 66 micromoles per litre) were associated with a 42 per cent lower risk of stroke, compared to the lowest average blood levels (less than 41 micromoles per litre), after adjusting the results for potentially confounding factors such as age, sex, smoking habits, alcohol consumption, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, BMI, physical activity, and use of supplements. When the Cambridge researchers excluded participants who consumed vitamin C-containing supplements the results were the same, indicating that the benefits could have been from vitamin C-rich foods, such as fruit and vegetables.
“We believe that these findings are of interest for several reasons,” stated the authors. “First, the strong inverse association between plasma vitamin C and stroke suggests that plasma vitamin C is likely to be a good biomarker of whatever causal factors affect stroke risk, most plausibly the dietary intake of plant foods.
“Second, irrespective of any causal associations, plasma vitamin C appears to be a good predictive risk indicator of stroke, independent of known risk factors such as age, BP, smoking, lipids, diabetes, and BMI.
“Given that about half of the risk of stroke is unexplained by conventional cardiovascular disease risk factors and that the predictive validity of traditional cardiovascular disease risk factors appears to diminish with age, risk markers that may help to identify those persons at greatest risk of stroke for targeted preventive interventions with established therapies, such as BP reduction, may be of interest.”
While further study is necessary, Myint and co-workers aid that it is unlikely that long-term randomised controlled trials using isolated vitamin C supplementation would be conducted using cardiovascular disease as an end-point. “Nevertheless, the magnitude of the association between plasma vitamin C and subsequent stroke is substantial and independent of known major risk factors for stroke,” they concluded.
In an accompanying editorial, Sebastian Padayatty and Mark Levine from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) welcomed the study as “refreshing in that its findings are both clear and not overstated”.
“We need readily measurable and reliable biomarkers of fruit and vegetable intake,” they continued. “Vitamin C is an attractive marker of fruit and vegetable intake because these foods are the primary sources of dietary vitamin C.
“However, use of vitamin C as an intake indicator has limitations. With ingestion of pure vitamin C, there is a steep sigmoidal dose-concentration relation in humans for doses between 30 and 100 mg. At 100 mg, fasting steady state plasma vitamin C concentrations are about 60 micromoles per litre. At 200 mg, corresponding to an intake of about 5 servings of fruit and vegetables, fasting steady state plasma concentrations are about 70 micromol/L and do not increase much with higher doses. It is unknown whether the same dose- concentration relationships hold for vitamin C in foods.”
The take-home message from the study, said Padayatty and Levine, was that the public should aim for between five and nine servings of fruit and vegetables per day and to consume a wide variety of such foods.

This study is rather interesting but minor compared to the well known research done by Dr Louis Ignarro, who was awarded Nobel Prize for his 25 year research on Nitric Oxide, signalling mollecule in our body that is, amongst other things, responsible for our cardiovascular health and it’s production involves comsumption of antioxidants, including Vitamin C as well as some specific aminoacids, some of which are difficult to consume through a regular diet. Dr Louis Ignarro’s research was revolutionary as it made and proved a direct link between our diet and the lifestyle choices we make and our cardiovascular health.
Herbalife is proud to have Dr Louis Ignarro as a member of our Nutritional Advisory Board (NAB). We are also quite proud of NiteWorks, nightime heart supplement that aids natural production of Nitric Oxide, which could reduce risk of cardiovascular disease and strokes in particular. The following are the articles that are directly related to Dr Louis Ignarro and his awarded research, NiteWorks supplement and Herbalife’s solutions for Heart Health:

Study: Green tea’s heart benefits gain support!
Regular consumption of green tea may improve the function of endothelial cells – cells lining the walls of blood vessels – and boost cardiovascular health, according to new research from Greece.
The small study with 14 healthy adults found that the benefits of the beverage was not related to the caffeine, indicating the possible role of green tea polyphenols, previously linked to protection against certain kinds of cancers and Alzheimer’s.
The study is published in the European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation.
“These findings have important clinical implications,” said study co-author Charalambos Vlachopoulos from Athens Medical School in Greece.
“In this same context, recent studies have also shown potent anticarcinogenic effects of green tea, attributed to its antioxidant properties,” added Dr Vlachopoulos.
Study details
The Greek researchers randomly assigned the volunteers (average age 30) to one of three groups. The first receive six grams of green tea, the second received 125 mg of caffeine (equivalent to the caffeine dose from six grams of tea), and the third group received hot water.
The volunteers consumed each of the interventions on three separate occasions, and the effects on flow-mediated dilation (FMD), the measure of a blood vessel’s healthy ability to relax, measured 30, 90 and 120 minutes after consumption.
Green tea increased FMD by 3.9 per cent 30 minutes after consumption, while no changes in FMD were observed following consumption of caffeine or the hot water placebo.
“Green tea consumption has an acute beneficial effect on endothelial function, assessed with FMD of the brachial artery, in healthy individuals,” wrote the researchers and “this may be involved in the beneficial effect of tea on cardiovascular risk,” they concluded.

Science stacks up for B vitamins and its supplementation, especially during pregnancy….
B Vitamins are essential nutrients required for the successful generation of energy in many of the Krebs Cycle’s energy production pathways and Oxidative Phosphorylation. Several researches done on B Vitamins suggest it’s defficiency in modern diet and need for supplementation.
Vitamin B6
Researchers at Tufts University have suggested deficient vitamin B6 levels across large sections of the US population, which could be reduced via supplementation. The study identified four groups as being particularly deficient in the nutrient, among which are especially women of reproductive age, particularly current and former users of oral contraceptives, male smokers & and over-65s.
“Across the study population, we noticed participants with inadequate vitamin B6 status even though they reported consuming more than the Recommended Daily Allowance of vitamin B6, which is less than two milligrams per day,” said Martha Savaria Morris, PhD, an epidemiologist at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts.
Vitamin B6 has been linked to heart health and immune system function and is important for red blood cell performance. Deficiencies can cause anaemia.
The RDAs for vitamin B6 in men and women who are not pregnant or lactating are 1.3mg per day for men and women ages 19-50; 1.7mg per day for men over 50 and 1.5mg for women over age 50.
The latest Dutch research suggests that low maternal vitamin B12 levels in combination with certain genes may have detrimental knock-on effects to the offspring, suggesting in additon higher risk of heart problems.
A combination of low vitamin B12 levels and certain genotypes for the methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) and transcobalamin II (TC) genes were found to increase the risk of CHD by about 35 and 100 per cent, respectively, report the researchers in the journal Molecular Genetics and Metabolism.
“Therefore, it might be favorable to advise women to use a diet rich in vitamin B12 and eventually a vitamin B12 supplement in addition to a folic acid supplement in the periconception period to achieve an optimal vitamin B12 status,” wrote Anna Verkleij-Hagoort from Erasmus MC, University Medical Center in Rotterdam.
Vitamin B12 and Cardiovascular link
The research builds on reports from epidemiological studies that increased levels of the amino acid homocysteine may lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Moreover, high levels of the amino acids in mothers has been associated with congenital heart defects (CHDs) in the offspring, state the authors in background information in the article. However, low blood levels of vitamin B12 in the mothers and in combination the maternal or child’s MTRR 66 GG genotype were found to increase the risk be 40 and 30 per cent, respectively. Furthermore, a TC 776 GG genotype in mothers and children and low maternal vitamin B12 levels increased the risks of CHD by 120 and 90 per cent, respectively, wrote the authors.
“In conclusion, MTRR 66 GG and TC 776 GG genotypes in mothers and children may contribute to the risk of CHDs, particularly when the maternal vitamin B12 status is low,” wrote Verkleij-Hagoort.
Vitamin B6 and pre-conception & early pregnancy link
The importance of B vitamins, particularly folate, in foetal development is well established. The new study expands our understanding of the potential of pre-conception diets to influence the health of offspring.
Earlier this year an epidemiological study report that high levels of vitamin B6 prior to falling pregnant may boost conception rates and reduce the odds of losing the baby during early pregnancy (American Journal of Epidemiology, Vol. 166, pp 304-312).
Additionally, a recent study with sheep, published in the prestigious journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, indicated that mothers with low B vitamin levels before conceiving tend to have fatter male offspring at greater risk of high blood pressure.
The findings were deemed to be important for species with two legs, since the pre- and post-natal development of sheep is approximately the same as humans.

Results of a study: Soluble fibre boosts satiety and aids weight loss
Supplements of soluble dietary fibre may increase weight loss by boosting satiety, and has beneficial effects for cardiovascular health, suggests the latest study.
A soluble fibre supplement improved cholesterol levels in overweight and obese subjects, who also lost about four kilograms more than people in the placebo group over 16 weeks, report scientists in the British Journal of Nutrition.
The researchers, led by Jordi Salas-Salvado from Saint Joan University Hospital in Reus, Spain, randomly assigned 200 overweight or obese patients to receive either a mixed fibre dose (three grams of Plantago ovata husk and one gram of glucomannan) twice or three times a day, or placebo for 16 weeks. The study was a parallel, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.
At the end of the study, the researchers report that weight loss ‘tended’ to be higher in both fibre groups (4.52 and 4.60 kg lost in the twice and three times a day group, respectively), compared to the placebo group (0.79 kg lost).
In addition, satiety was reported to be increase after consumed the fibre-rich meals.
Moreover, LDL cholesterol levels – a cardiovascular risk marker – decreased by 0.38 and 0.24 mmol/l in the twice and three times a day group, respectively, compared to a decrease of only 0.06 mmol/l in the placebo group, state the authors. Improvements in the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol and HDL to LDL were also reported.
“In conclusion, a 16-week dietary supplement of soluble fibre in overweight or obese patients was well tolerated, induced satiety and had beneficial effects on some CVD risk factors, the most important of which was a significant decrease in plasma LDL-cholesterol concentrations,” wrote Salas-Salvado.
Soluble versus insoluble fibre
Studies have also reported that insoluble fibre, which contains cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin and cannot be dissolved in water, may reduce the risk of obesity and diabetes, but the biological mechanism underlying the benefits has only been assumed.
The assumption was that the fibre reduced the glycemic response (a rise in blood glucose), thereby increasing satiety and decreasing energy intake. A lower glycemic response decreases the demand for insulin, therefore reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.
The recommended fibre consumption in the UK is 18g per day. In France it is 25 to 30g, and in Germany it is 30g. In each of these countries, average consumption is lower than these levels.
These results indicate the importance of fibre in a healthy diet and the benefits of functional and weight management foods having high insoluble fibre content.
Herbalife offers variety of products that help boost the intake of fibre:
Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix - 1 shake offers the fibre equivalent of 4 wholegrain slices of bread.
FloraFibre – Friendly bacteria and dietary fibre
FibreBond – Natural Fibre and Sodium Choleate Tablets – For controlling fat absorption and weight-loss support
Is there enough fluid and fibre in Herbalife Programme?
Yes. When followed as recommended, the Herbalife Programme provides adequate liquid and 25 grams of fibre. This is more than is found in the average diet of industrialised countries and is the level recommended by health authorities worldwide. Supplemental fibre tablets are available for those who wish to further increase their daily fibre intake.
What is fibre?
Fibre is the indigestible carbohydrate residue found in foods. There are two types: soluble and insoluble. Soluble is soft and mushy – for instance beans and porridge; insoluble is hard and coarse, such as wheat bran. Natural foods are usually high in fibre, i.e. wholegrains, nuts, seeds, fruit and vegetables.
What happens to fibre in the body?
It passes through the stomach into the digestive tract, and on to the large bowel intact where it absorbs water and other waste material and it is passed as stool.
What good does fibre do?
Apart from the results of the above study, a good intake of dietary fibre reduces the amount of time food spends in the intestinal tract. Dietary fibre can help speed up the passage of food and so assist in the removal of toxins and wastes from the body.
What is recommended daily amount?
25-35 grams or higher is recommended. At present, the amount consumed in a typical European diet is just 12-15 grams. You would need to consume the equivalent of approximately 25 slices of wholemeal bread to consume 35 grams of fiber. Research shows that a lack of fibre in the diet is a factor in many health challenges.

Heart Nutrition: Ways to improve levels of Nitric Oxide in the body – key to a longer, healthier life
Dr Louis Ignarro spent over 25 years discovering and researching the benefits of Nitric Oxide, a signalling molecule produced organically in our bodies, which helps to control blood flow to every part of our body. His 1998 Nobel Prize was not just for the discovery of NO, but also for discovering it’s importance for the human body and how his research can benefit the humanity.
I have been trained by Dr Louis Ignarro on a few occasions and his enthusiasm and passion for saving the humanity from the disease is contagious. His research proves that Nitric Oxide, this single molecule that is produced by the body itself, may be the single factor that contributes to all major illnesses and, at the same time, the key to living a longer, healthier life…

NO’s production in the body can be improved by Weight Management, decrease in intake of Saturated Fats, increase in Dietary Fibre, consumption of Antioxidants, consumption of Green Tea, by adding Omega 3 fish Oils to your diet, adding Garlic to your diet, increase in Dietary Soya, consumption of Dark Chocolate, Red Wine, Pomegranate and Grape Juice, Blueberries and by Boosting Fitness. Here is how Herbalife can help you boost your NO production…
NiteWorks and Nitric Oxide
Niteworks is a scientific breakthrough, developed in conjunction with Nobel Laureate – Dr Louis Ignarro who has dedicated his life to researching the health- enhancing benefits of Nitric Oxide. This product is changing the way people think about health and offers a proven program for boosting production of the body’s own wonder drug – Nitric Oxide.
Niteworks has been formulated specifically to supply vital amino acids together with beneficial antioxidants that also assist the natural production of Nitric Oxide in our bodies. Learn more about Niteworks…
Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Nitric Oxide
Omega 3 fatty acids from fish oils help reduce total blood fats, reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and raise HDL (good) cholesterol. Also, fish oils benefit the heart by keeping platelets, saturated fats, and cholesterol from sticking together and clogging arteries, contributing to heart attack and stroke. Research shows that the production of Nitric Oxide increased within minutes after exposure to omega 3 fatty acids.
Although marine food is truly nutritious, a fact we can not deny, studies show that the European diet often does not take full advantage of this fabulous marine harvest. Green Tea and Nitric Oxide
Green tea has been known in China as a powerful healing agent for at least 4000 years. More recently medical researchers can begin to explain why green tea seems to be effective against some major diseases: Cancers (especially prostate and breast), Rheumatoid arthritis, High blood pressure, High LDL cholesterol, Arteriosclerosis, Blood Clots, Heart Attack, Stroke…
Green tea contains powerful antioxidant (EGCG), which appears to kill cancer cells without harming healthy ones and it combats oxidative stress and protects your endothelial cells from invading molecules, thereby safeguarding Nitric Oxide production and improving your cardiovascular health.
Green tea also seems to speed up the rate at which the body burns up fat, making its consumption supportive of weight loss.

Soy and Nitric Oxide
Soyhas been a staple of the diet in Japan for many years and heart disease is amongst the lowest in Japan, and at least the part of the credit belongs to soy. Soy is filled with phytonutrients that function as antioxidants and fight everything from cardiovascular disease to cancers of the breast and prostate. In particular, soy substance called isoflavones interfere with the oxidation of blood fats, preventing free radicals from being formed and from causing endothelial damage that interferes with Nitric Oxide production.
There are plenty of ways to incorporate soy into your diet such as through soy yogurt or milk or tofu as a substitute for meat dishes. Here are some products offered by Herbalife that contain soy and can help you with your daily soy intake:
Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix
Formula 3 Personalised Protein Powder
Soya Roasted Nuts – Healthy Snack
Fibre and Nitric Oxide
Studies have suggested that soluble fibre can perform such antioxidant tasks as lowering blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels and increasing HDL cholesterol – thereby protecting the endothelial cells where Nitric Oxide is manufactured. We are now coming to believe that fibre works through substances called phytonutrients, which seem to have the antioxidant advantage when it comes to guarding NO. Higher fibre foods also tend to contain other nutrients like vitamin C and E, powerful antioxidants that stimulate your production of NO.
The following Herbalife products contain dietary fibre:
Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix
Formula 2 Multivitamin & Mineral Tablet with added Fibre
FibreBond

Celebrate February – the Heart Month! Healthy Heart: Dr Louis Ignarro and Niteworks: Say YES to NO!
February is officially a heart month and heart disease happens to be our leading cause of death. Virtually everyone nowadays will know someone who either has suffered, or still is, from some form of heart disease.
Treatment of heart disease nowadays is merely through the prescription drugs. Not a lot of people have the knowledge about the disease or are encouraged to acquire it to be able to understand the science behind the disease in order to help themselves rather than relying on drugs and treatment for the rest of their lives. The latest breakthrough in medicine suggests that heart disease is a lifestyle disease and, as such, preventable and even reversible with the change in lifestyle, which could mean, for many, longer, quality life without prescription drugs…
It all started with Dr Louis Ignarro, PhD,, who was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery that Nitric Oxide (NO), a signalling molecule produced organically in our bodies, helps to control blood flow to every part of our body and it can be produced organically, within the body by the intake of right kinds of foods and supplements.
Dr Louis Ignarro has discovered that the Nitric Oxide is crucial to our well-being and the difference between health and dysfunction is often the level and activity of Nitric Oxide in our body. Nitric Oxide is critical to the promotion of both your health and longevity as Nitric Oxide deficiency can contribute to nearly every major disease of our times.
This may be the first time you’ve heard of Nitric Oxide, but guaranteed, it will not be the last. As the key to good health, it is the missing link that may make the difference in understanding all kinds of age-related illnesses and circulatory disorders.
Say YES to NO
Nitric Oxide is a gas that acts throughout the body as a messenger and influences the functioning of virtually every organ in the body, including the lungs, liver, kidneys, stomach, genitals and, of course, heart.
The cardiovascular system uses Nitric Oxide to control blood flow to every part of the body. Not only can Nitric Oxide relax and dilate (enlarge) the blood vessels, thus ensuring that blood can efficiently nourish the heart and tissues of the entire body, Nitric Oxide can also support healthy blood pressure levels.
The immune system uses Nitric Oxide to combat toxins, providing a strong internal defence system.
The brain relies on Nitric Oxide to store and retrieve long-term memories and to transmit information within the nervous system.
Nitric Oxide enhances blood flow to the genitals, thus playing an important role in normal sexual functioning.
Nitric Oxide is a powerful antioxidant, inactivating so-called “oxygen radicals” (free radicals) in the body that can contribute to cell damage.
A deficiency, therefore, of Nitric Oxide, can have a dramatic impact on our health. A total lifestyle approach to supporting Nitric Oxide levels including a healthy diet, exercise and nutritional supplementation, provides a wide range of benefits throughout the body at the cellular level which can improve circulatory, immune and nervous system function.
In his book, NO More Heart Disease, Dr Louis Ignarro preaches how heart attacks, strokes and cardio vascular disease can become the plague of the past. Here he focuses on how nitric oxide affects the entire vascular system: by relaxing and enlarging blood vessels, NO regulates blood pressure, prevents blood clots that trigger strokes and heart attacks, and protects against the accumulation of vascular plaque.
If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, the information in this book can be truly life changing. The research into NO is ongoing in a number of areas, showing promise in fields in addition to cardiovascular disease. People with (or at risk for) Diabetes, Erectile dysfunction, Rheumatoid arthritis, Cancer, Ulcers, Urinary incontinence, Alzheimer’s disease, Infections, Inflammatory disease (e.g. Chron’s Disease), MS, etc., are already benefiting, or might soon be helped, the ongoing studies of NO.
Dr Louis Ignarro has published numerous articles on his scientific research. He received the Basic Research Prize of the American Heart Association in recognition for his outstanding contributions to cardiovascular health. In 1999 he was inducted in the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
He also is the founder and president of the Nitric Oxide Society, as well as founder and editor-in-chief of the scientific journal Nitric Oxide Biology and Chemistry.
Dr Louis Ignarro’s revolutionary findings have fuelled the creation of NiteWorks™, a night time supplement (as body produces the least amount of Nitric Oxide during the night), exclusive to Herbalife, which uses the benefits of Nitric Oxide in a new and exciting way.
Niteworks brings Cellular Nutrition to the next level.
It is a refreshing lemon-flavoured nightime powder mix that offers the life-enhancing benefits of L-Arginine and L-Citruline that convert to increased Nitric Oxide in the body.
This exclusive product assists with optimum blood flow, thus delivering nutrients to the cellular level to improve function of virtually every organ in your body. Together, Cellular Nutrition and Niteworks allow you to target the nutritional health of your vascular system. Now you can zero in on taking case of your vascular system simply by incorporating this remarkable advancement in nutritional science in your daily life.
It would be difficult to ingest the same amount of L-Arginine from foods as what your body gets from Niteworks. More about Niteworks…
Herbalifeline® – A premium-grade nutritional marine lipid complex (Omega – fish oil) capsule with special nutritional and herbal factors
Marine food is truly nutritious, a fact we can not deny, but studies show that the European diet often does not take full advantage of this fabulous marine harvest. Herbalifeline® enables you to benefit from the fruits of the sea; formulated to help maintain supple joints and to support the natural function of the heart and circulation.
Key Ingredient Properties: Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids:
- “Essential” because body can not produce Omega 3’s and must obtain them from dietary sources.
- Provide a rich source of Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) which are converted by the body into prostaglandins. These hormone like substances are considered to be essential for proper brain function affecting vision, co-ordination, mood and learning ability. They also help maintain healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood, thus helping to control blood pressure, maintain the immune system and help mediate inflammation.
- Low reflux formula helps to minimise fish oil taste during digestion.
- Small, easy-to-swallow, soft-gel capsule.
Did you know….
- A common sign of EFA deficiency is dry skin.
- EFAs are easily destroyed by heating or exposure to oxygen.
- To reduce your exposure to fats that are harmful – avoid fried foods, burnt or brown fat, saturated or hydrogenated fat and add a quality EFA supplement to your daily diet
Frequently Asked Questions
Aren’t all fats harmful?
Foods containing polysaturated fats provide us with Omega 3 and Omega 6 essential fatty acids (EFAs) which are good components of fat.
Why is it important to consume a sufficient amount of Omega 3 EFAs?
Omega 3 EFAs are essential because we need them to maintain good health. The body can not produce them independently and must obtain them from dietary sources. Omega 3 EFAs are ofter deficient in the modern diet. Studies show that Eskimos and the Japanese, who for centuries have eaten fatty fish, have a very low rate of heart disease and circulatory disorders due in part to their diet.
Why are Omega 3 EFAs often deficient?
Marine food (including salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines) is the main source of Omega 3 EFAs, but not so much popular or regular culinary choice. This may be due to the high price paid for quality fresh fish. It can be more difficult to cook, or may taste “bland” in comparison with meat and cheese dishes.
Are you getting enough?
At least three portions of marine food weekly is recommended amount indicated by nutritional experts. This quantity provides adequate quantity of Omega 3 EFAs.
What if you do not like fish?
For those who only eat fish once a week or not at all, Herbalifeline’s quality Omega 3 ingredients help to top-off the body’s needs and fit in with a busy lifestyle.
Omega 3 and Omega 6 EFAs – which is which?
Many of the oils we use are plant based (vegetable or sunflower oil), these provide a good supply of Omega 6 EFAs, but have virtually no Omega 3 EFAs as Omega 3 EFAs are primarily found in marine food.
What are the benefits of taking Herbalifeline® regularly?
This supplement has been formulated to help maintain supple joints and to support the natural function of the heart and circulation. The ingredients can also help us maintain healthier looking skin.
I don’t like taking fish capsules because of the aftertaste…
The capsule contains three essential oils: thyme, peppermint and clove, which help keep the fish oil fresh and pure and reduces any aftertaste.
How much do I need?
Your body’s needs for EFAs will depend on your weight, diet and lifestyle. If your diet contains a lot of saturated fats (fats that are solid at room temperature), your needs are greater.
How can Herbalifeline help increase Nitric Oxide in the body?
Fish oils can protect your endothelial cells – and their ability to make NO – by interfering with the oxidation process, blocking platelet aggregation that can trigger a heart attack or stroke, and even minimizing the risk of heart arrhythmias. Research has consistently shown that the production of Nitric Oxide increased within minutes after exposure to Omega 3 fatty acids.

L-Citruline: An amino acid that stimulates the body to produce more L-Arginine, which in turn produces more Nitric Oxide. It may be found in melons.
L-Taurine: A semi-essential amino acid found in eggs, dairy products, meat and fish, which plays an important role in Nitric Oxide production.
D-Alpha Tocopherol (natural Vitamin E): A fat soluble antioxidant that supports the activities of Nitric Oxide. This preeminent antioxidant can penetrate the cell membrane to neutralise free radicals and promote cell health.
Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C): A water soluble vitamin that enhances Nitric Oxide production together with vitamin E and L-Arginine.
Alpha Lipoic Acid: Helps protect Nitric Oxide in the body, it is a co-factor in vital energy-producing reactions in the body. Assists in dilation and expansion of vessels. Also has strong antioxidant activity while helping recycle vitamins C and E.
Folic Acid: Helps protect the vascular system by promoting healthy levels of homocysteine.
Lemon Balm: Helps provide a feeling of relaxation asit acts as a calming agent. Perennial herb in the mint family with a history dating back 2000 years.
Niteworks™ is a revolutionary dietary supplement containing an exclusive blend of L-Arginine and L-Citrulline with other ingredients that trigger the production of healthful Nitric Oxide. This is important, because as you age, production of Nitric Oxide, the naturally occurring compound which keeps blood vessels young and flexible, declines.
Herbalife teamed with Dr. Ignarro to develop Niteworks™, a lemon-flavored powder mix. Niteworks is formulated to help you create more life-supporting Nitric Oxide during the night, when Nitric-Oxide levels are naturally at their lowest.
Niteworks™ helps your arteries stay youthful, protects your overall cardiovascular health and slows your body’s clock on internal aging.
Nitric-Oxide benefits: Through vascular nutrition, you can increase the production of Nitric Oxide, which “exercises” or expands your vessels, increasing their youthful elasticity. In addition, Nitric Oxide is an important biological messenger that causes a cascade of benefits at the cellular level, which can improve circulatory, immune and nervous-system function. Nitric Oxide influences the functioning of virtually every organ in the body, including the lungs, liver, kidneys, stomach, brain and, of course, the heart.
Nutrition that counts: Exercise and certain foods promote Nitric-Oxide production in your body. Niteworks is designed for nighttime consumption when your body is producing the least amount of Nitric Oxide from food and exercise. However, this product can also be used during the day. Regardless, it would be difficult to ingest the same amount of L-Arginine from foods as your body gets from Niteworks.
We are proud to offer Niteworks™ — a revolutionary new product with amazing benefits. This dietary supplement powder-mix helps your body create increased and longer-lasting Nitric Oxide to keep your arteries flexible.
Nitric Oxide – I’ve never heard of it!
Worldwide, thousands of research papers have already been published extolling the many virtues of Nitric Oxide – this essential molecule is expected to become as “common” as Vitamin C.
Don’t I get enough Nitric Oxide in my diet?
Nitric Oxide is naturally contained in a regular diet although it can be hard to get enough. It is also created during exercise. However, production decreases during the night and may begin to decline after the age of 35. SO, if you are in your mid thirties or younger and copying with stressfull lifestyle, supplementing with additional Nitric Oxide is a wise supportive measure.
Does Niteworks™ only work at night?
During the night, the body replenishes itself, rather like “recharging battery”. SO for optimal effects, it makes sense to take it at night. We recommend that you take Niteworks only once in a day, as during the day, your body should get enough Nitric Oxide from regular excercise and diet/food.
How does Nitric Oxide help with my arteries?
Arteries deliver oxyge-rich blood to the organs while veins bring oxygen-poor blood to the heart to be recycled. As we age, arteries and veins can lose tone and weaken, resulting in deminished blood flow i.e. varicose veins and clogged arteries. Nitric Oxide assists in promoting blood vessel tone and regulating vascular tone.
I’m concerned about heart disease/ unstable blood pressure…
The “at risk” contributory list is long: saturated fats, fried foods, excess sugar, salt, lack of fresh fruit/ vegetables/ oily fish in diet, low water intake, diabetes, excess weight, smoking, lack of excercise, stress, hereditary and genetic factors… Niteworks™ is a key player in Herbalife’s Heart Programme, designed specifically to include positive lifestyle choices and help improve overall well being.
Why should I choose Niteworks™ over other Arginine products?
Its superios formulation provides antioxidants Vit C and E, which extend the activities and lifespan of Nitric Oxide in the body.
Can I take Niteworks™ with other Herbalife Products?
Absolutely. Niteworks™ can be used with Herbalife’s entire line of nutritional products. Niteworks™ ensures you give your body the Best Nutrition while you sleep…
